Keeping Up with Your New Year Resolutions
As we enter the second month of 2021, it’s time to check in with our New Year’s Resolutions! How are you doing? Have you stuck to your plan? Here at Tidy Spaces, we understand that sometimes life simply gets in the way, but we can’t let that stop us from achieving our goals! If you’re finding yourself falling off track of your original plan, have no fear! The Tidy Spaces team is here with some tips for getting back on course!
- Revisit your original plan
Having trouble sticking to your resolution? It’s time to be honest with yourself—revisit your original plan and ask yourself if this goal was realistic. We often go into the new year with high hopes and expectations of ourselves to be able to completely change our lifestyle in the new year. It’s okay to make adjustments to your plan if you’re finding it difficult or impossible to follow. A great example of this is the resolution of becoming more organized. You may have decided to clean out one room in your home per week, but may be realizing that this is a much more time consuming task than you expected, and that’s okay! Change your plan to organizing one room every two weeks or even every month. This way, you’re still sticking to your resolution, but setting yourself up for more success by making a more realistic plan!
- Find a functional reward system
As human beings, we thrive off of rewards. Whether it’s in your workplace or your personal life, we crave recognition for our achievements. This is why it’s challenging for many individuals to stick to their new year’s resolution—we often keep our goals to ourselves, resulting in a lack of positive reinforcement when we have stuck to our plan or crossed a big milestone. Finding a functional reward system is greatly important to your progress! Remember to keep in mind that your reward system must make sense. If your goal was to get in better shape, you may not want to reward your achievement of being able to do twenty push ups with ice cream and cake. Instead, try rewarding yourself with something else you love, like treating yourself to a DIY spa day or even a Tidy Spaces gift card. Functional rewards, like self-care products or services help contribute to your overall goal of becoming the best version of yourself. As a reminder, this tip goes hand-in-hand with the tip from our original New Year resolution blog, where we highlighted the importance of developing a system to measure your achievements, so you know exactly when to reward yourself!
- Fall down seven times, stand up eight
It’s easy to get upset when you slip up or fall off track, however you have to remember that this is all a part of the journey. Regardless of whether your goal is training for a marathon or gaining control over your finances, you cannot expect yourself to be perfect. Learn to simply accept it and move on! If you skip a workout, it’s okay, just don’t miss the next one; if you go over your weekly budget, it’s okay, see where you can make adjustments so you meet it next week. You are only human and you are going to make mistakes, just do your best to get right back on track!
