Earth Day Swaps for Sustainability and Organization
Happy Earth Day! This year marks the 51st anniversary of the creation of Earth Day, a day not only to honor our planet but to get informed on environmental issues and how to take action. While we are all well-informed on issues like climate change and global warming, the Tidy Spaces team wants to share some useful ways we can take action and advocate for sustainability in our daily lives. We have found that sustainability and organization go hand-in-hand and there are some simple swaps you can make to practice more sustainability and become more organized! Keep reading for our recommendations on how to be eco-friendly and organized!
- Swap single-use coffee filters for reusable cloth coffee filters
If you wake up every morning excited to make the perfect pot of coffee, paper coffee filters are probably your best friend. However, traditional disposable coffee filters are incredibly wasteful and often contain harmful chemicals; for those of us that are daily coffee drinkers, that’s at least seven filters a week! Swap your paper filters for reusable cloth filters, like these made from organic cotton. These cloth filters are good for up to 100 uses, and are 100% compostable. Replacing paper coffee filters for cloth ones is a great way to save money–since you’ll have to replace them less frequently–practice sustainability, and continue enjoying your morning coffee!
- Swap plastic sandwich bags for a sandwich bag drying rack
Plastic sandwich bags are a convenient way to pack snacks for those of us always on the go or for our children’s lunches. However, plastic often goes unrecycled, winding up in our oceans, endangering our marine life. Reusing sandwich bags is a great way to reduce your plastic waste, and this drying rack is an excellent tool! Rather than tossing used plastic bags in the trash, put them back in your lunch box or backpack to wash out and place them on the drying rack when you get home!
- Swap takeout for lunch for a reusable lunch box
We all love the occasional takeout meal from our favorite restaurants every once in a while, but it’s easy for ordering out to become a habit. But ordering takeout involves lots of disposable boxes, cutlery, and napkins, creating more plastic and paper to go to waste. Next time plan to pack your lunch in a super stylish lunch box. Having a lunch box that you like will (hopefully) make packing your lunch more exciting and enjoyable, and you don’t have to worry about any single-use plastic items!
- Swap your one-bin trash system for a recycling and compost system
Sustainability begins in the home, so setting your home up for sustainable success is key! Most cities in the US only require residents to have one trash can for all types of trash. However, incorporating recycling into your daily routine is a great way to help live a more eco-friendly lifestyle. Having multiple bins for trash, various types of recycling and compost can make your kitchen feel cluttered, but this recycling and compost system is an excellent solution! With this layered system, you’ll have one compact area to keep all of your trash in their respective bins.
Earth Day is a great day to learn about simple swaps like these and revamp your sustainability practices. It’s more important now than ever that we all do our part to one day have a healthier planet. And don’t worry, you don’t have to sacrifice your organization for sustainability!
